“How much longer?” one of the men asked as they ate the last of their rations. “We’ll have to hunt from here on out. We can’t keep this up. They’re going to start worrying about us and there’s been no sign of him.”

“He’s out there,” Bishop replied. “And you volunteered for this, so don’t give me any more of your crap.”

The guy put his hands up. “Hey man…I didn’t know it was going to take weeks, not days. My family is worried and so am I.”

Jax put a hand on Bishop’s arm, stilling his next outburst. Jax stared the man down. “Bishop would be out here without complaint if it was your son.”

The man got up and walked away, muttering under his breath.

“He’s not wrong,” Bishop commented to Jax when the others left as well.

“Yes, he is. Like you said, he committed to a search and rescue. But he’s also right. Look, I can go search up ahead a day and return later tomorrow. The horses need a break and so do the men. What do you think?”

Bishop nodded. “Yeah, I think you’re right. If you don’t find anything then maybe we’ll have to return. Ugh…” Bishop rubbed his face. “I hate feeling like this. I can’t believe I have to face Maeve and return empty-handed. I’ve failed her.”

“You’re forgetting something. We trained him. He’s not helpless.”

“I think we have too much faith in our training.” Bishop chuckled. “This land is wild now in ways we never dreamed. The animals are bigger, more prevalent, and more vicious. They’re not afraid of humans any longer. They don’t shy away. They approach. The storms are sudden and brutal. At least the sun is coming out more and the ice is melting. I didn’t expect that to happen so quickly.”

“A lot can change in eleven years when there’s a break from human existence.”

“Yeah, I’ll say. It’s both better and worse than I’d imagined. But no one can say it’s not beautiful.”

“Most deadly things are beautiful when you think about it. Well, I’ll get some sleep and head out at sunrise…if there’s a sunrise, that is.”

Bishop nodded, “Thank you, Jax. I mean it.”

“I know you do. He’s my son, too. You both are.”

Bishop smiled at the man who had helped a generation survive one of the worst catastrophes on Earth for man. Without him, he didn’t think he could have saved so many.

Bishop sat by the fire a little longer, staring into the flames. It would be a long journey back to Colorado empty-handed but the man was right. He couldn’t keep them out here any longer without any sign of Ben. He tossed the remains of his water into the flames and doused the light.
